Sergeant Shauna Brocklebank Adams, 27, of Long Branch, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Pyeongtaek, Korea.
Shauna was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. She was a 2003 graduate of Long Branch High School where she was in the National Honor Society and played varsity field hockey and lacrosse. Shauna then went on to Montclair State University, where she was a 4 year outstanding lacrosse player on the varsity team.
She graduated in 2008 with B.S. degree in Nutrition and Food Science. Shauna was well loved in her hometown of Long Branch. In 2010, Shauna enlisted in the U.S. Army and she was recently promoted to Sergeant. Shauna was currently serving in Korea.
Surviving is her husband, Kyle Adams, whom she married on Feb. 15, 2012 and is currently serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan; her parents, Nancy and Matt Brocklebank, Long Branch; her sisters, Maggie and Randi Brocklebank, at home; her maternal grandparents, Robert and Janet Frampton, Toms River; her paternal grandparents, Paddy and Buddy Brocklebank, Oceanport; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Janet and Lenny LeBlanc, Thibodaux, La.; and her brothers-in-law, McCade and Logan.
LONG BRANCH - Maggie Brocklebank stopped by Long Branch High School today to look at the flag flying at half-staff. It was a quiet moment of reflection, Brocklebank said, because the flag had been lowered for her sister, 27-year-old Army Sgt. Shauna Brocklebank Adams. The Long Branch native and graduate of the high school died in a training exercise in South Korea in March.
Calling her "an honorable and courageous young woman who loved her country and the military," Gov. Chris Christie issued an executive order earlier this week that flags across New Jersey fly at half-staff today in honor of Adams.
"She was a role model," said Brocklebank, 19. "She was my best friend. She was just awesome."
Adams, who graduated from Montclair State University in 2008 and enlisted in 2010, worked in the military intelligence field in South Korea. Her family is awaiting a final report for more details of her death, which was described as a motor vehicle accident, Brocklebank said. "We still don’t know exactly what happened," she said.
The sisters used Skype and text messaging to keep in touch, and recently they had a lot to talk about. During the span of one week in February, Adams became engaged and married to Kyle Adams, a fellow soldier whom she met in South Korea. Kyle Adams is now serving in Afghanistan, according to the family.
"I had to find out her ring size for him, so I knew it was going to happen," Brocklebank said. "She was going to have an actual wedding ceremony later. I was the maid of honor. I was so excited."
