Captain Gregory T. Dalessio
Hometown: Cherry Hill, NJ. Age: 30 years old. Died: June 23, 2008 in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Unit: Army, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Ft Bliss, TX. Birth: Nov. 6, 1977, Cherry Hill, Camden County, New Jersey, USA. Army Capt. Dalessio was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany. He died of wounds sustained in Salman Pak while on his second tour of duty. Greg graduated from Bishop Eustace Prep School in Pennsauken, New Jersey in 1996. After graduation, he attended Seton Hall University where he was a member of the ROTC program and earned a bachelor's degree in special education and a master's degree in diplomacy and international relations. He was drawn to the Army because he admired the values of the military. But those who know Greg say the two predominate loves in his life were his family and his faith in God. Being the oldest of eight children, family was all important to him and at Christmas he wrote each member of his family individually to thank them for their impact on his life. On June 23, he emerged from a weekly reconstruction meeting with Iraqi officials and was fatally shot. As Greg lay dying, his captain held him in his arms and told him how much he was loved.
