HUDSON COUNTY –Staff Sgt. Raul M. Guerra, 37, of Union City, who died July 4 in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan, will be honored by the Hudson County Freeholders at their Aug. 10 meeting.
Guerra, who was assigned to the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., was on his fifth tour of duty, one in Iraq and four in Afghanistan, died on July 4 in Afghanistan in the southern Kandahar province, on the Pakistan border.
His awards and decorations include:
Joint Service Commendation Medal (two awards)
Army Commendation Medal (two awards)
Army Good Conduct Medal (four awards)
National Defense Service Medal
Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star
Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star (two awards)
Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
Overseas Ribbon (five awards), NATO Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Driver and Mechanic Badge.
Guerra was remembered by Army Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield as “a courageous and passionate warrior,” who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the fight and protection of others.
