We Honor and Remember:
LCpl. Jon T. Hicks Jr.
Hometown: Atco, New Jersey, U.S. Age: 20 years old Died: September 10, 2007 in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Unit: Marines, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Birth: Oct. 30, 1986, Marlton, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA. Hicks was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated as his unit was on patrol. Jon was a quiet and well-behaved teen who neighbors remember as a gentleman. After graduating in June 2005 from Hammonton High School in Hammonton, New Jersey, he decided to work a little and relax for six months before deciding what he wanted to do. His desire to do something good with his life is what motivated him to join the Marines in January 2006. While Jon was in Iraq, he would write his family to send candy and potato chips, which he shared with other Marines and Iraqi children. He was due to return home in November and wanted to join the police force in Atco, the section of Waterford Township, after the Marines. Jon loved football and kept up with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also liked playing video games and paintball. Hicks grew up on the same street as Navy SEAL David M. Tapper, 32, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2003. Tapper’s mother, Judith, described the loss of her neighbors’ son as “devastating.” Burial: Atco Cemetery, Atco, Camden County, New Jersey, USA. |
