The Solinas Family regrets to announce the passing of their son, Army Sgt. David Solinas, Jr., whom tragically lost his life on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.
Survived by his devoted parents, David and Ellen Solinas. Dear brother of Stephen, Brendan and Aidan Solinas. Cherished grandson of Hannah Philpott and Mary Lou Solinas. David will be missed by his beloved dog Scout, countless friends, family and all who had the great pleasure of knowing him.
A formal obituary and announcement of services to follow.
Sergeant David Solinas Jr., 23, an Oradell native, was killed during a Medi-Vac training mission near an Army base in Kentucky, his younger brother Aidan said on the steps of the family home Friday night.
He said his parents, as well as brothers Stephen and Brendan, were heartbroken.
“We are a loyal family and we are proud that David trained to save soldiers on the battlefield,” said Aidan Solinas. “Being a flight medic is one of the most difficult jobs you can do and shows that David was a man of compassion and faith, with a special devotion to Mary, our Blessed Mother.”
The family thanked the 82nd Airborne Division, 101st Airborne Division and their families and friends for their love, support and prayers before requesting privacy at this time.
The two helicopters crashed into a field near the Tennessee border, the Associated Press reported. But there was no official word from the army as to what caused the crash.
A flight safety team from Fort Rucker, Alabama, is investigating the crash, the 101st Airborne statement said.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, Gov. Phil Murphy said he and his wife were dismayed to learn a local soldier was among the victims.
“At just 23 years old, David has already made an impact in his community and his ministry will not be forgotten,” said Murphy. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Sgt. Solinas. In his memory and in honor of his service to our nation, I will sign an executive order Monday morning calling for flags to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, April 4.”
Solinas was a rugby player and wrestler at River Dell High School in Oradell where he was a member of the Class of 2017. He attended Norwich University in Vermont before joining the Army.
